Set up a public DNS server

Instructions below show standard setup procedures for each operating system. Open any provider’s details above to copy its specific IP and hostname configurations.

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet and select your active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  2. Click Hardware properties, then click Edit next to DNS server assignment.
  3. Switch from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual and toggle IPv4 on.
  4. Enter the provider's Preferred and Alternate DNS addresses (e.g. 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1).
  5. Windows 11: Set DNS over HTTPS to On (automatic template) if supported.

What makes a resolver fast and trustworthy

Technical standards that separate modern high-performance resolvers from legacy ISP infrastructure.

Anycast routing

Major resolvers announce the same IP from hundreds of edge locations globally. BGP routing automatically sends your packets to the nearest healthy server point of presence.

EDNS Client Subnet (ECS)

ECS forwards part of your IP address to authoritative nameservers so CDNs can select nearby content clusters. While improving CDN routing, it reveals partial subscriber network information.

DNSSEC validation

Validating resolvers verify cryptographic signatures on DNS records to protect against cache poisoning and spoofed answers. All verified resolvers in this directory support DNSSEC.
